It is undeniable that the possibility of experiencing an intimate moment with a stranger is an attractive one and may be one of the most prominent reasons why one on one theatre is so popular today. But are you getting what you paid for? It seems to me that due to the pre-determined nature of performance, spontaneosity, a key feature of intimacy, is rarely ever present. A participating audience member’s natural need to self-monitor will banish to an extent their willingness to be vulnerable to whatever may occur within a performance, thus limiting their chance of an intimate interaction. One factor that gives us hope is the immediate nature of one on one theatre, the time is short and the performer is blunt thus forcing the audience into an intimate situation even though they may not realize at the time that they are in one.
